Excessive foot sweating, called plantar hyperhidrosis, is more than an inconvenience. It can lead to recurring fungal and bacterial infections, persistent foot odor, skin breakdown, problems with shoes, and significant quality-of-life impact for the people who deal with it daily.
Many patients with hyperhidrosis have been told there's nothing to be done. That isn't true. There is a stepwise approach to treatment that works for the majority of people who try it.
How We Treat Hyperhidrosis
Step 1: Simple Interventions
For mild to moderate cases, the first-line approach includes prescription-strength antiperspirants applied to the feet, moisture-wicking socks, regular rotation of shoes to allow them to dry fully between wears, and addressing any secondary skin or nail problems.
Step 2: Prescription Treatments
When simple interventions aren't enough, prescription topical agents and certain oral medications can reduce sweat production directly. We discuss the options, including any side effects, and find what works for your case.
Step 3: Advanced Options
For severe hyperhidrosis that doesn't respond to other treatments, options include iontophoresis (a device that uses water and a mild electric current to temporarily reduce sweat production) and Botox injections to block the nerves that signal sweat glands. We coordinate these treatments and can refer to specialists when needed.
Treating the Secondary Problems Too
If recurring fungal infections, skin breakdown, or persistent odor are part of the picture, we treat those alongside the sweating. The complete plan addresses the underlying problem and the consequences.
Your Hyperhidrosis Evaluation
You are evaluated by a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon. We assess the severity of the sweating, any related skin or nail conditions, and your treatment history. You leave with a clear plan that starts with the simplest effective option for your case.
